Reimagining analytics for a credit card application made for GenZ

March 2022

his was a task of a larger project made for Pineapple Design Studio during my tenure as a product design intern. This was also my first task at Pineapple.

Problem Statement

The aim of the task is to rethink and redesign the existing analytics section of the credit card application.

The existing analytics screen had too much going on the single screen where it was showing multiple analytics as well as all the transactions made through the card, which increased the cognitive load for the user. The aim was to declutter the screens and come out with innovative ideas to show analytics to the user.

Secondary Research

To understand the problem better it was important to understand who are our users and what are their needs. The app was designed primarily for GenZ. A credit card is a debt facility which makes a few people afraid about availing it, while a few others fear going overboard with their expenses, owing to minimal financial literacy.

Due to the limited time, we did not get the opportunity to conduct full-fledged user interviews, So in order to gain insights and learn about the user needs, I talk to some of my friends who owned credit cards and tried to learn about their needs.

After talking to some of my friends I got some insights:

Users found finance app analytics overwhelming due to information overload and taking a lot of time to comprehend the data.

• Users wished that the analytics was more insightful and easy to comprehend.

• Users were keen to learn about their spending and wanted to regulate their spending.

• Based on these insights we developed the following solution.

Solution

The first thing we did in order to declutter the screen was to separate the analytics and transactions data. The transaction section was turned into a complete screen and can be accessed through the nav bar at the bottom. Whereas analytics had two access points 1. On the home page 2. In the transaction section.

For analytics, based on the research we needed to create quick, insightful analytics for the user. We came up with a story-based format for analytics which refreshed itself after a period of time.

Here users get insights about their spending, points collected, and their top brands. On some screens users also received some actionable based on the insights.

In case users spend a certain of their credit card limit on a certain category, say food, users are prompted to set a category limit in order to control their spending.

In the second iteration of our designs, we worked on the frequency of these stories. So, we divided the stories into weekly and monthly insights. Each week's insights contained feedback, that if the insight was helpful for the user it would help the system to create more personalized monthly insights for the user.
